The Drowning of Edward Samuel Tidestone

As a child, I dreamt of floating in the dark, cold and alone. Looking upon myself, my body adrift in the blank expanse. A shifting blackness surrounds me my vision limited to just beyond my reach. I can only sense the movement around me. Feeling the hunger that exists unseen, so much desire. My guts twist as if I haven’t eaten in weeks. A flash of light coalesces into a doorway. I know of the monster in the dark, always reaching, always hungry. Many nights I would awaken at the sounds of my own screams, drenched in cold sweat, salt on my tongue. As a child these dreams terrified me, but as the years pass, and the more lucid I became, I grew to not be afraid of what lies in the dark. Now though I reach for it, I never learned what it was beyond the dark veil. In learning what lies beyond our imagination could be as much a boon as a bane. For we do not know what lurks in the dark until we find it, or it finds us.
